1" Black Slate Chip

$175.00

1" Black Slate Chip is a sharp, clean decorative rock mined from the historic Chili Bar Slate area near Placerville, California. This dark gray to black slate has a naturally flat, fractured shape that lays beautifully in small rock areas, walkways, borders, dry creek beds, modern landscape beds, and low-maintenance decorative placements.

Because slate breaks into flatter pieces than rounded rock, it creates a clean layered look with excellent coverage and a refined natural texture. The deep charcoal color pairs well with boulders, concrete, metal edging, drought-tolerant plants, modern homes, rustic landscapes, and lighter-colored stone.

Chili Bar slate has roots in California Gold Country history. The Chili Bar area was named for Chilean miners who worked along the South Fork of the American River during the early placer-mining years. The slate quarry itself dates back to the 1880s, when slate was cut for roofing shingles, counters, and other building uses. Today, that same durable slate is used in decorative landscape rock, slate chips, boulders, and flagstone.
